A Message from our Secretary: Jim Stone

Each year I look forward to the Furse reunion. I guess I am a reunion junkie, because I look forward to my family reunions, and class reunions also. And to me the Furse reunions are a little like getting back together with family and classmates. It sounds like Dan and Tudy have put together an outstanding itinerary for our enjoyment in Mobile. I truly hope to see you all there,

Dear FURSETTE Friends;

I‘m looking forward to our USS FURSE reunion this year.   It’s a state we have never visited and that is always fun. I enjoy visiting new places. Mobile has many interesting spots to visit and Tudy and Dan have planned a great itinerary for us. The best thing of all about every reunion is not just the tourist attractions but it is the chance to be with all our FURSE family and making new friends. PLEASE make plans now to join the crew in October.

Our FURSETTE meeting will have something special this year. We will have a friend come in and talk to us about Mardi Gras and the parade and the beads and the food and all things Mardi Gras. What a great thing!

Everyone loves our ALMOST FAMOUS RAFFLE AND AUCTION!  The money we raise from this pays for the expenses of the hospitality room and the group lunch on Saturday. It’s important that we all contribute to these. Remember everyone loves homemade items and nautical things and of course anything USS FURSE related is the best. PLEASE bring something with you to contribute to our fundraiser. Everything helps.

Dear Furse Family and Friends,

We invite you to join in the fun of making new friends and renewing old friendships in the lovely southern town of Mobile, Alabama at the 29th annual USS Furse reunion.

We’ve planned two interesting tours for your enjoyment; the USS Alabama Memorial Park and Bellingrath Gardens and Home.  Lunch and all gratuities are included in the cost for both tours.

At the USS Alabama Memorial Park we will tour the World War II battleship USS Alabama and submarine USS Drum, both are moored at the edge of Mobile Bay.  The Drum is credited with sinking the seventh largest tonnage during WWII.  We can also tour the Aircraft Pavilion with planes from every war.   Lunch will be provided.

The Bellingrath Gardens and Home tour will allow you to enjoy this 65 acre garden spot of the south.  The 15 room, 10,500 square feet home was built in 1935 and contains the furnishings and possessions of Walter and Bessie Bellingrath. Walter Bellingrath was president of the Mobile Coca-Cola Company.  Lunch will be served in the Magnolia Restaurant located at the Gardens.

Our hotel is the Admiral, a Hilton Hotel on the Historic Register.  This hotel opened in 1940 and refurbished in 2016 in an art deco design and is close to many museums and restaurants you can experience on your own.  The deadline for hotel reservations is September 16, 2019.  The room rate of $109 plus tax will be honored 3 days prior and 3 days after the reunion dates.  When booking your room by phone or computer use the booking code FUR.   Self or valet parking is available next door to the hotel.

We hope to see you in Mobile,

Dan and Tudy Riddle
